Kahikatea Syndicate

Welcome to Kahikatea. We are the senior block of the school with Year 7 & 8 students.

Skate Competition 2010

On Sunday the 11 April 2010 we did a sk8 competition. It was for a hockey fundraiser. The juniors went first and their names were Jayden, Paris and Regan. And they all did well and Jayden scored a t-shirt.

Then the bigger kids went and there were two big girls. Their names were Sharnaya and Lesina. Lesina scored a sk8 board and Sharnaya broke her arm.

After that the seniors went and I was in this round. We all tried very hard at this one. Most of us ollied the 7 stairs. Then Brandon H played on the pyramids.

Then time was up and some of us made it in the finals. We did the same things over again. Toss was the winner of the senior final, and I came second. I got a cool t-shirt for my prize.

Kahikatea Food Fundraiser Day

Imagine all kinds of yummy food for sale at school.  Food like lasagne, fruity juicies, roti, sizzling sausages, crispy wedges, fruit jellies, chop sui, suafa’i, apple crumble, sandwiches, chocolate brownies, ice blocks, watermelon, noodles, Indian omelette, hotdogs, tacos, spaghetti and meatballs, fruit faces… the list goes on.

The students of Kahikatea had a challenge to raise as much money as they could by selling these delightful dishes to begin their camp fundraising.  Firstly we were put into groups and we had to give roles to each person in the group.  The roles were Director, PR (to advertise what we were selling), Artistic Designer and Administrator.

The next thing to do was to plan our food, it had to be healthy but at the same time delicious and affordable.  Posters were made, permission slips were written and business plans were designed.  Figuring out how much profit we were going to make was important.

The selling of our food ran smoothly. The atmosphere was tense, electrifying but fun at the same time.  We have learnt a lot from this experience, things like working as a team, organising a business plan, asking our parents for advice and how to sell things to make a profit.

This day was a huge success due to the co-operation of parents, students and the whole school coming together as one.

Girls' Self Defence Project Aotearoa/New Zealand

The Kahikatea girls all took part in a two day self defence workshop. Jan, the facilitator led the course and our girls are now stronger and wiser about difficult situations they might find themselves in. Here are some of their comments about the course…

• I think this is a very cool class and it is very different but I am happy I gave it a go. I feel a lot stronger now.
• It’s fun and you become more confident. We learnt lots of cool moves and how to use all of them to protect us. It’s really helped me a lot and I never knew that if you tuck your thumb under your fingers when you punch you could break your thumb. You’ve helped me use my voice against an attacker and many more stuff. Thanks heaps Jan.
• I think this course is awesome. I enjoyed it and learnt heaps of ways to defend myself. This should be given to all girls but I’m lucky I got it! Thank you for this opportunity.
• It is to help you protect yourself when you’re in a bad situation. It helps to build your confidence.
• It is good because it does make you confident.
