KAHIKATEA TERM THREE 2011 This term Kahikatea syndicate have
participated in swimming and water safety lessons at Cannons Creek Pool. We
were lucky enough to have 4 amazing trained instructors who helped us to
develop our aquatic skills. We immensely enjoyed our lessons and are looking
forward to continuing to develop them. |

KAHIKATEA TERM THREE 2011
Our Motto:
“Honesty, Maturity and Respect”
This long established motto underpins the behaviour of the students in our
Syndicate. This motto, along with the School Motto of “Respect for self,
others and the environment” drives the decision making of the students and
teachers in our block. It also provides the basis for driving academic and
sporting achievement.
LEADERSHIP:
Our student leadership team meet regularly to discuss ways our
Syndicate can demonstrate leadership across the Syndicate and School.
PrEP:
Our Syndicate’s focus for this term is the Primary Enterprise Programme (PrEP).
Through this programme, students aim to establish and sustain their own
companies for the duration of the year. Already the students have had to
complete job applications, write personal statements & c.v.s, conduct
interviews, negotiate contracts, write business proposals, apply for bank
loans, create a bank (with its own special currency) and a warehouse all
while learning to work in a business style environment. Already there are
companies offering a range of goods and services such as fortune telling,
delivery services, lawyers, a dance troop that offers dance lessons, a
skateboarding company, a range of craft items, a clothing recycling business
and much much more. In a few weeks time Kahikatea Syndicate will run a
School PrEP market day where students and families can purchase things from
each of the company. We look forward to also working alongside “Partners
Porirua” to make connections with the business world.
TAMITI MUA:
Our Syndicate has continued to work towards building the school’s motto of
RESPECT. We will continue our Tamiti Mua rotation this term in which
students work with teachers to learn about being a positive citizen, look at
ways of giving back to our community, working alongside parents and the
community, and working to make our school environment bigger, better and
brighter.
KIA KAHA:
We are working alongside Amanda Parsons (our Police Education Officer) to
run the Kia Kaha programme this term. The focus of this programme is on
building “safer communities together” which links very well to our Tamiti
Mua Programme. Over the course of the programme students will get to explore
the following themes:
1. developing positive self esteem
2. respecting differences and acknowledging similarities
3. identifying bullying and strategies for overcoming bullying
4. working cooperatively
5. building a safe, bully-free class and community
GOAL SETTING:
Remember the recipe of success is to: Think it, say it, write it, do it!

| Girls' Self Defence Project Aotearoa/New
Zealand The Kahikatea girls all took part in a two day self defence
workshop. Jan, the facilitator led the course and our girls are now stronger
and wiser about difficult situations they might find themselves in. Here are
some of their comments about the course…
• I think this is a very cool class and it is very different but I am
happy I gave it a go. I feel a lot stronger now. • It’s fun and you become more confident. We learnt lots of cool moves and
how to use all of them to protect us. It’s really helped me a lot and I
never knew that if you tuck your thumb under your fingers when you punch you
could break your thumb. You’ve helped me use my voice against an attacker
and many more stuff. Thanks heaps Jan. • I think this course is awesome. I enjoyed it and learnt heaps of ways to
defend myself. This should be given to all girls but I’m lucky I got it!
Thank you for this opportunity. • It is to help you protect yourself when
you’re in a bad situation. It helps to build your confidence. • It is good because it does make you confident. |
