Principal's Welcome We hope that your association with us will be successful and rewarding. This page is
intended to inform you about the operation of our school. It contains that important information you need to know. You may have additional questions. Please do not hesitate to contact any one of us if this is the case. Our aim is to keep you fully informed about how our school works. Rangikura School was established as a contributing school in 1975. In 1992, in response to community initiatives, we became a full primary school. We now cater for children from Year 1 to 8. Our buildings consist of an open plan space with our Year 3 and 4’s. Our Year 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8 students are in single classrooms.
In 2008/9 we built a new hall and gymnasium. This was a long planned project. We wanted to achieve a fantastic facility that would serve the school well for many years into the future. We believe we have achieved that. We recently held a basketball tournament involving a number of other schools which showed off our new hall to the wider community. We are really pleased we can hold school shows and concerts in our hall rather than hire outside facilities.
In 2009 we received additional funding which we used to replace two of our small relocatable classrooms. The new rooms are now meeting the needs of two of our Year 7/8 classes for extra space. The school staff work closely as a team. Teachers are supported by their colleagues as they work to provide quality teaching and learning opportunities for each student. The school is very fortunate to have such dedicated staff who work hard for the benefit of each of our students.
Our Board of Trustees are an effective group who are committed to work to ensure the successes of our school continue. Paul Nees PRINCIPAL principal@rangikura.school.nz back to index

| Communication We have a policy of open communication at our school. We want to make sure all members of our school community are fully informed. From time to time you may have questions or concerns. We are always happy to discuss these but would appreciate a phone call first so that we can arrange a time to give you our undivided attention. We also need to keep our records up to date. Please let us know about changes in home circumstances, addresses, telephone numbers, emergency contacts and health issues. We need this information so we can respond quickly and appropriately to your child's needs. back to index
|
| Civil Defence emergency contact In the event of a serious emergency requiring evacuation of our school premises we will not release students to unauthorised people. As it may not always be possible for parents to collect students we ask parents to name two people can take responsibility for children in a major disaster. These adults will need to be known by the children and be in a position to come to school to collect the children and care for them until their parents can join them. back to index
|
| Accidents, Illness and first aid We have a comfortable and suitably equipped medical room that is used for treatment only. For injuries or illness requiring further attention, parents are notified and asked to take their child for further attention. Parents are always contacted if a head injury occurs. back to index
|
| Emergencies We have a clear set of emergency procedures which will be followed by students and staff in the event of any emergency. Earthquake and fire drills are held regularly so that students are familiar with procedures. In the event of a Civil Defence emergency all staff and students will remain at school until the Principal can safely release them. Parents and caregivers who could be stranded away from home have the confidence in knowing that their children will be carefully supervised until they are collected by a parent, guardian or caregiver. back to index

| School Newsletters Newsletters go home every second Wednesday. From time to time the newsletter will include information from our Board of Trustees. We intend the newsletter to include community information, space permitting. If you wish to include anything please send it to school well before the newsletter is due. Newsletters can be viewed here. Syndicates also communicate with parents. Syndicate newsletters go home regularly. back to index

| PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN SCHOOL We encourage parental involvement in school and classroom programmes. We believe that involving parents in what we are doing strengthens the vital school-home link. When your child starts school as a New Entrant you are most welcome to support him/her in the classroom. All teachers in the school are very happy for you to be involved and help out with classroom programmes. An extra pair of hands is a great help in a busy classroom. Please contact a staff member if you have the time to help us. You may even wish to help in a classroom other than the one your child is in. We also encourage parents to help out with sports teams and with cultural activities. Please let us know if you can help. back to index

| HEALTH ISSUES It is important that we are aware of any health issues affecting your child. Please inform us of these at the time of enrolment. We also appreciate updates if your child's condition changes. If your child has asthma it is most important that you fill out a school asthma action plan sheet so that we know how to respond if your child has an attack at school. We are happy to hold emergency inhalers at school. From time to time children will suffer from school sores. These are very contagious. Please keep your child at home until they are fully recovered. Head lice are a fact of life. Every child will probably have them at some stage during their time at any school. It is not necessary for a child to give up any activities because of head lice. It is important though that the teacher is told so we can alert other parents of children in the class to check. back to index

| ABSENCES
If your child is absent for any reason we would appreciate a phone call or text
to 022 025 9630 on the day (please ensure you include the child's name). If this is not possible a note on return is essential. Names of students absent are collected each day and we will contact parents
(via phone or text) who haven't already phoned in. It is important that children attend school regularly. They should only be absent due to illness or sometimes for family reasons. back to index

Exceptions will be made for those with illness or colds - a note to the teacher is necessary if this is the case. As we do not have a swimming pool we hold our swimming lessons at Cannons Creek Pool. Travel to the pool is by bus. There is a charge for pool hire and for transport. This is advised prior to swimming beginning. back to index

| Lost Property We strongly advise that all clothing is named. Any lost property is kept in a box located in each block. There is also a lost property collection area in the medical room in the administration area. The clothing collected in the lost property is regularly disposed of. Parents are advised by newsletter when this is to occur. back to index
|
| Road Safety We want our students to get to and from school safely. We strongly advise that students walking to school use the patrolled crossings on Warspite Avenue and on the corner of Desert Gold and Conclusion Streets (near the kindergarten). These crossings are patrolled each morning from 8.25 until 8.45 and each afternoon from 3.00 - 3.20. back to index

| Homework The following is the Policy Procedure Statement followed by the school: Syndicates will seek parent/caregiver interest and involvement in their children's homework. Each syndicate's homework policy will be published in the school information booklet for parents'/caregivers' information and in the school newsletter on a regular basis.
The syndicate homework policies are as follows: Kowhai - Years 1/2 Children will take home either a book, a spelling word, a picture with a caption or a poem or nursery rhyme for home reading most nights. Rimu - Years 2/3/4 Homework will include spelling words and language activities activities related to the class programme maths maintenance activities related to the strand being worked on

| Library Books/Readers Your child will be bringing home school readers and library books. These resources are expensive. The better we look after the resources we have the more money we save which can be used on new resources. Having to spend money on replacing lost or damaged resources is very frustrating. Please help us by ensuring children take care of school resources at home. We are very proud of our well resourced library which children use extensively as part of the programme. The library is open for children to use during two lunch hours per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Duffy Books Our school is a proud Duffy School. Children receive free books a number of times each year. There are also role model assemblies and a performance by Duffy Theatre. Preschoolers are catered for through Duffy Kids at Home. On their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th birthday they receive free books. To enrol your preschooler for this programme contact the Principal. back to index
|
| Reading Recovery All children are tested at age 6 to determine whether or not they need extra reading/writing assistance. If your child needs Reading Recovery you will be notified by the school and invited to observe a lesson. Most children who go through the programme benefit greatly from it.
|
| Learning Assistance At present the Board of Trustees employs teachers to assist children with special needs or special abilities. Class teachers refer children to the Learning Assistance Committee each term. You will receive a letter home if your child is on the programme. Children's progress is monitored and discussed with the classroom teacher. back to index

| Parking Parking at the school is limited. When delivering or picking up children, parents are asked to park with care and consideration to others. Extreme caution is needed when exiting the car park. Parents are not permitted to use the top car park, this is for staff and service vehicles only. back to index.

| School Hours The school day is made up of 3 sessions 8:55 - 10:30 - morning session 10:50 - 12:30 - morning session 1:30 - 3:00 - afternoon session Children should arrive before 8.55 a.m. so that they can be organised and in class by bell time. | Reporting To Parents We hold informal meet the teacher interviews in Term 1. Children receive reports in June which are followed by interviews. It is important for all parents to attend these interviews. Parents will be able to view their children's work portfolios at these interviews. End of year interviews are available to parents in November. Parents of New Entrant students enrolled after July 1 will receive a written report after their child has attended school for approximately six weeks. back to index
