Tournaments of the Mind

Tournament of minds is about kids from Wellington to Palmerston North competing together in a competition that shows how creative they are.

Let me tell you what this competition is all about.

At first we had to do some spontaneous challenges for our warm up. The spontaneous challenges are all about working as a team and thinking of creative things to make the solutions funny or interesting. That's how you can get as many points as you can.

There is a maximum of 2 judges that give you a small challenge and you can only think of the solution in 4 minutes. So it's quite hard.

The Long Term challenge contains 2 disciplines; The Social Sciences Challenge and the Language Literature.

This is when you have 2 set of judges and a group of 7 kids perform a play to the judges that they have prepared at school. The judges will identify if they think you have got all the things that were in the Challenge book. They've also got to check if all the forms are handed in.

Then the teams do their plays, the judges will ask the audience to go out and then they will ask us some questions about the play.

Our challenge was that books had disappeared from all over the world and no one could get them back.

Our play was about Tanemahuta stealing all the books from the houses because kids were too busy playing playstation instead of reading books. It had an evil blood thirsty book eating monster and evil news reporters in it.

The other challenge that we had to do was do all the things by ourselves. We raised $75 by having a cake sale and this money was used for everything we had to buy.

The performance for the judges had to be a play that was between 6 and 10 minutes.

Our team got a plaque for coming first with combined points for both challenges. We were so happy because it was our first year doing it.

"United We Stand" is what our play was called.

We competed in the Social Science Social area.

Our challenge was about getting four cultures that live in a country called Disunitia to come together as one through dance.

The styles of dance we used were Samoan, Lao, and  Kung fu - Hip hop.  Our finale song was Black or white.

It took 6 weeks to organise everything like our lines, props, costumes, scripts and raising the money for our props.

We felt nervous when we were performing.  The results were excellent and the best part was .........

We came 1st in our grade!
